TAMMUZ 14

At Night

“…and shall speak of them … when you lie down …” (Deu 6:7)

When our children were very young (the youngest is now mid-40’s), we had a bedtime habit that lasted for many years. Using a small cassette player that was equipped with auto-reverse, we would softly play the entire Bible on cassette when our children went to bed – the player would play the same tape all night long. The following night, we would play the next tape in the series, and so on. It was all an amazing learning tool; our children, to this day, will recite verses they did not realize they knew. At this present time, none of our six children are walking the Torah walk; however, they all certainly know what the Word says. And my husband and I stand on the promise of “train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he turns not away from it.” (Pro 22:6) Silly kids, they might as well give it up.

Since I first came into this Torah walk, and learned these verses found in Deu 6:4-9, I have developed the habit of saying the Sh’ma – to myself – the last thing before I go to sleep. Yes, there are times when I fall asleep before I finish my recitation, but what better way to fall asleep!

His Word is Who He is. Like a down comforter on a frosty winter night, His Word, His Torah, should cover us, envelope us, as we lie down. I have one very special friend and sister that listens to Torah teachings when she goes to bed, through her phone, learning while she sleeps. What an awesome way to learn!

“I lie down and sleep, then wake up again, because Adonai sustains me.”  (Ps 3:5 CJB)
